Professor Wilhelm Schabel (KIT) studied process engineering at University Karlsruhe (TH) until 1999 and since 2009 he is professor of Thin Film Technology at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). His doctoral thesis in the field of film drying was awarded with the Carl Freudenberg Award in 2005. In 2007 he received the Arnold-Eucken Award (fom VDI_FVC) and in 2008 the L.E. Scriven Young Investigator Award from the International Society of Coating Science & Technology (ISCST). 2007 and 2008 he worked in industry at LOnza FOils (LOFO, Basel) in the R&D department for film casting and coating applications. In 2009 he was appointed to the first professorship in Thin Film Technology in Germany, initially funded within the German Excellence Initiative I for 5 years by the “KIT Elite Future Concept I” and an industry consortium of BASF, BAYER, and ROCHE with 3 million € as a “Shared Professorship” at KIT. Professor Schabel is an international member of the Board of Directors of the International Society of Coating Science & Technology and the European Coating Society. In  2014 he declined a full Professorship (W3) offer to Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at TU Dresden (Excellence University in the German Excellence Initiative II) and continued his research career at TFT at KIT with new laboratories at KIT Campus North and KIT Campus South. In 2021 he was honored by the University of Cambridge as an “EDWARDS FELLOW”,  in 2022 with the “EXCELLENCE IN DRYING AWARD” and in 2024 with TALLMADGE Award (Considered as the highest international scientific award in the field of Coating Science & Technology) in recognition of his achievements in drying & coating research. In 2023 he was as President of the European Coating Society (ECS).

Since 2023 he is a lecturer at HECTOR SCHOOL (Technology & Business School (International Department of KIT). Numerous Members of the TFT group have been honored for best posters, talks & innovations with so far more than 45 research awards.
